Nevada Women's Summit 2004:
Energizing and Activating for Change
From the opening statements on feminism by Lois Helmbold, to the closing song of Lucie Blue Tremblay, some 220 participants experienced the surge of energy to do more in 2004, as attendees of Women’s Summit 2004, sponsored by the Nevada Women’s Agenda, the educational affiliate of NWL. The event was held March 20 at the Stardust Hotel in Las Vegas.
Summit highlights included speeches by California Congress-woman Barbara Lee and New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson, a special recognition award to Governor Kenny and First Lady Dema Guinn, and the dramatic performance, If Anyone Asks You Who I Am, presented by nine African American women.
Two provocative and interesting panels were on the agenda. The first, "Choice is Still an Issue," featured Former Nevada Lt. Governor Sue Wagner, Gloria Feldt of Planned Parent-hood Federation of America, and Crystal Plati of Choice USA. The second panel, comprised of Teresa Benitez, Rozita Lee, Emma Sepulveda, Laura Vargas, and Rose McKinney James discussed "Women United: Communicating across Age, Race and Class."
Seven breakout sessions stimulated discussion and action on critical issues at risk in the current political climate. If that wasn’t enough, there were more than forty exhibit tables to visit.
