Nevada Women’s Lobby (NWL) works to secure reproductive freedom for women and men in Nevada. We strive to ensure that state legislators do not pass laws that take away the right of individuals to control their own family planning. NWL supports affordable access to birth control, sexual health education, and safe abortion services.
Sexual Health Education
Nevada has the seventh highest teen pregnancy rate in the nation, yet the majority of Nevada students do not receive medically accurate, inclusive sex education. NWL is part of the Nevada Teen Health and Safety Coalition, a statewide group working to promote real sex ed in schools. We have lobbied proactively for laws that would require medically accurate sex education in public schools statewide. In 2015, nearly half of Grassroots Lobby Day attendees were youth who were advocating for better sexual health education. NWL was proud to play a role in training these youth about legislative advocacy and supporting their efforts.
NWL supports a woman’s right to affordable birth control. We support the Affordable Care Act requirement that provides for no co-pay birth control and work to ensure that Nevada legislators do not limit this. We support laws that prevent employers from discriminating against their employees ability to access birth control.
NWL believes all women have a legal right to safe and affordable abortion services. During the 2015 legislative session, we successfully defeated the first anti-abortion restriction that had been introduced in Nevada in decades. Along with our coalition partners at Nevada Advocates for Planned Parenthood Affiliates and the American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada, we were able to stop a bill that would have required minors under the age of 18 to notify their parents and undergo a 48 hour waiting period prior to obtaining abortion services. NWL opposes any restrictions to abortion services and will work with partners and legislators to ensure that the right to choose is protected in Nevada.
